Two of Pontypridd’s most famous structures have been illuminated as part of the regeneration programme for Pontypridd town centre. The iconic William Edward’s Bridge and the Brunel Viaduct were chosen as the two landmark structures in the market town to undergo this massi The scheme is being introduced in an effort to increase pride in the town and awareness of the unique experience on offer to visitors. Artist Lulu Quinn was commissioned to deliver the Monument Illumination Scheme which has been acclaimed by residents and visitors alike. The project was funded through a variety of sources including Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, Arts Council for Wales, Visit Wales, Welsh Assembly, Pontypridd Town Council and Macob. On his third attempt, William Edwards completed his iconic bridge across the River Taff in 1756. Once the longest single-span bridge in the world, this structure is now regarded as Pontypridd’s most recognizable feature. The famous Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel built a section of the stone railway viaduct over the River Rhondda in 1837 to ensure a link between Merthyr and Cardiff. Today it dominates the skyline view from Pontypridd towards the Rhondda.
