Landmark Illumination Scheme

lulu-quinn1Two of Pontypridd’s most famous structures have been illuminated as part of the regeneration programme for Pontypridd town centre.

The iconic William Edward’s Bridge and the Brunel Viaduct were chosen as the two landmark structures in the market town to undergo this massive transformation.

The scheme is being introduced in an effort to increase pride in the town and awareness of the unique experience on offer to visitors.

Artist Lulu Quinn was commissioned to deliver the Monument Illumination Scheme which has been acclaimed by residents and visitors alike.

Lulu Quinn works with sculpture, video and installation and has produced numerous works for public spaces and galleries in the UK and internationally.

The project is being funded through a variety of sources including Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, Arts Council for Wales, Visit Wales, Welsh Assembly Government, Pontypridd Town Council and Macob.

On his third attempt, Eglwysilan-born William Edwards completed his iconic bridge across the River Taff in 1756.

Once the longest single-span bridge in the world, this structure is now regarded as Pontypridd’s most recognizable feature.

The famous Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel built a section of the stone railway viaduct over the River Rhondda in 1837 to ensure a link between Merthyr and Cardiff. Today it dominates the skyline view from Pontypridd towards the Rhondda.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Housing Cllr Paul Cannon said: “The project is intended to showcase the spectacular feats of design and engineering embedded in these historic structures. We are in effect celebrating Pontypridd’s past while also ensuring a flourishing future by attracting even more people to visit here.”
