Time For Improvements At St Catherine's

It’s definitely been “time” for improvement at Pontypridd’s St Catherine’s Church as the clock and bell chime now work properly for the first time in over a quarter of a century.

Mayoral Chaplain Reverend Marcus Green has commissioned significant work at the landmark church in order to repair the chimes, which have not worked for an estimated 25 years and to also repair the mechanisms on the clock.

clock_1Supported by Rhondda Cynon Taf Mayor Cllr Robert Smith, the work has seen an overhaul of the bells, chimes, clocks and internal mechanisms, the likes of which the church has not seen for over half a century.

Worked carried out ensures the sweet sounds of bell-ringing can now be heard from the church and the town now has a reliable clock for years to come.

Reverend Green said: “The work that has been carried out is significant and it has restored the bells and clock to the church.

“However, it has also seen the repair and improvement of the weights, mechanisms and clock hands that has been due for some time.

“The end result is new chimes and an accurate clock fitting for a church that is a traditional gateway and icon of Pontypridd.”

Mayor Cllr Smith added: “I was pleased to be able to support the extensive work at such an iconic church and to help the Mayoral Chaplain repair St Catherine’s for the benefit of everyone in the town.”
