|
Ynysangharad War Memorial Park in Pontypridd has won the prestigious Green Flag Award for the sixth year running. The park has been recognised as one of the country’s best green spaces with the prestigious award. Ynysangharad War Memorial Park stood out after impressing judges with its excellent use of green space, well-maintained facilities and high standard of safety and security. It’s been another busy year for staff at the park, which has hosted events attended by thousands of people, including Ponty’s Big Weekend, The Big Welsh Bite and the Teddy Bears’ Picnic.
Councillor Robert Bevan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, pictured above celebrating the award with Parks staff, said: “We are very proud of Ynysangharad Park and I’m delighted that it has achieved Green Flag status for the sixth year running. It is a very special place and this award is a reflection of the ongoing hard work and dedication of its staff.” Only green spaces that are free to enter and open to the public are eligible to win an award through the scheme, which is run by environmental charities Keep Britain Tidy, BTCV and GreenSpace. This year has seen the highest number of awards handed out – a record 1,200 Green Flags and Green Pennants across the UK compared to 1,013 in 2009. Green Pennants are awarded to parks or green spaces managed by a community or voluntary group. Go to www.greenflagaward.org for more information. |
